Journal #1 - "Attitude" Poem Response
Journal #2 - "Savoring Walk" Activity Reflection
Read article: "Take a ‘Savoring Walk,’ and three other research-based strategies to help you appreciate this life." from The Washington Post site. Take notes on the Cornell Notes sheet for a homework check. Complete one of the activities (#1, 2, 3, or 4). In your journal (Journal #2), write about which activity you did and how it went. Did it make you more appreciative or happier? In what way? Why or why not?
Journal #3 - Picture Description
Pay attention to your surroundings tonight and take a picture of something interesting with your phone; In journal #3, write a paragraph or two describing the item(s) in the picture that you took.
Journal #4 - In-class Essay #1 Reflection - How did your own score compare to the scores of your classmates and Mrs. Erskine? What were your strengths and weaknesses, etc. What could you do to make this a stronger piece, etc.
Journal #5 - Grammar Reflection
Reflect on the grammar and usage concepts with which you have the most difficulty. How much grammar instruction have you received in your education? How was the grammar taught/practiced?
Journal #6 - Stress Management
Administer the Managing Stress survey. Have students write a paragraph or two about what stresses them out and how they cope with it.
Journal #7 - Dollar bill activity
Draw a dollar bill from memory. Look at a dollar bill for 1 minute. Draw the dollar bill again. Write a paragraph about what it was like to draw it the first time versus how it was different the second time. Use dollar bill activity to lead in to chapters 3 and 4 discussion
Journal #8 - Complete descriptive paragraph (about the beach) re-write as Journal#8. Share responses.
Journal #9 - Sensory description of 1 of the 25 items. Write an expanded list of descriptive words and phrases for one of the 25 items.
Journal #10 - Find and read two descriptive essays online. In your journal (journal #10), write down the title of the website, write down the title of each essay and a 3-4 sentence summary of each. Explain which essay you preferred and why.
Journal #11 - Read Halloween and Classification. In your journal, complete the following questions for journal #11:
- According to the article, what does Halloween have to do
with Rumpelstiltskin?
- List the items that Stromberg says don't fit into any
classification system very well.
- What other things or moments of time are difficult to
classify? For example, the exact turning point of childhood
to adulthood.

2nd 9 Weeks
Journal #1 - (11/7/ & 11/9) Write a paragraph about gender roles in society today. Are men and women equal? Explain. How are the gender roles/responsibilities divided in your household?
Journal #2 - No-Bake Cookie Demonstration (11/14 & 11/15) Write down the exact steps I followed in the demonstration.
Journal #3 - Process (11/21 & 11/22) Write about a time that you did something for the first time (keep it clean!!!!). What was the process that you completed to perform the task.
Journal #4 - Research (12/9 & 12/12) Write about how your research process has been going. What has worked well? What has been frustrating? Any surprises along the way?
Journal #5 - Research Reflection (12/15 & 12/16) Fill in the peach sheet with questions about your research paper.
Journal #6 - Goals (1/3 & 1/4) Make a list of 5 goals you wish to achieve between now and graduation. Write a paragraph about how you will achieve those goals.
Journal #7 - Literary Analysis (1/5 & 1/6) Choose 2 topic areas from the Analyzing Short Stories Chart and answer the questions in paragraph form regarding "Story of an Hour" - i.e. a paragraph about the characters and a paragraph about the theme, etc.
